Mothers Union

The Mothers’ Union is a worldwide organisation supporting Christian Family Values working tirelessly towards the advancement of the Christian religion in the sphere of marriage and family life.

Started in 1876 by Mary Sumner, the wife of the vicar at Alresford as a parochial fellowship for the mothers in the parish, it has grown to a membership of over 4 million people in 80 countries worldwide. Its Head Office is in Mary Sumner House London, please visit the website www.themothersunion.org. St. Mary’s is part of the St. Albans Diocese of the Mothers’ Union, which has its own website with information about the projects and activities it is involved in locally, as well as nationally and internationally, www.stalbansmu.org.

We have a very active Mothers’ Union here at St. Mary’s.

The afternoon group meet on the second Tuesday of every month at 2pm in the Parish Room. The evening group – EMU’s (Evening Mothers’ Union), while using St. Mary’s as their base, travel around Stevenage visiting local Churches for their meetings which are on the last Tuesday of every month, if you would like to know where they will be this month, please contact Kim Wilkinson EMU’s contact on 07889 608274.

Both groups offer a wide range of activities at their meetings, including prayer, talks, meditation, services and a variety of activities from knitting to cheese and wine socials. Fellow members from other branches are always welcome as are visitors who would like to join in the meetings or are looking to become a member themselves. Membership is open to anyone who has been baptised in the Holy Trinity and it is not restricted to mothers! Men and women, married or single, widowed or divorced everyone can be assured of a warm welcome. If you are interested please send an email to the St. Mary’s website where it can be forwarded to the branch leader.
